Market Insights: IntelliShift Positioned in Gartner’s 2021 Market Guide for Transportation Mobility

Market growth rate forecast highlights that data and analytics will play an even bigger role in the future.

By John Carione, VP Marketing at IntelliShift

We’re excited to announce that IntelliShift has for the first time been included in Gartner’s latest Market Guide for Transportation Mobility. The topics covered in this Market Guide are resonating profoundly with leaders in vehicle and asset operational excellence. This is an important milestone for IntelliShift, as the market is evolving quickly and clearly gaining steam beyond traditional telematics.

Overall, Gartner highlights that the market is growing at an even more rapid pace this year. Gartner states, “The global commercial telematics market continues to grow at approximately 25% per year. This growth is driven by government regulations and fueled by the in-vehicle data collection and connectivity delivered by the aftermarket telematics solutions as well as original equipment manufacturers (OEM) offerings.”

I did a comparison between last year’s Gartner Market Guide and the current report and found that the growth projection jumped from a 15% CAGR to 25%. This increase is likely due to the broadening nature of what Connected Operations platforms in transportation mobility offer fleet and field operations driven organizations. At IntelliShift, we are seeing an increase in organizations that currently have separate point solutions including telematics, ELD, fuel management, dash cams, maintenance, inspections, or asset management, but want to consolidate on a single system to drive more engaging customer journeys and internal data transparency in business processes that span multiple areas.

According to Gartner, the key drivers of the market include government regulations, driver safety, increasing costs and an increased need for visibility. They also highlight that the incorporation of advanced edge-based compute into telematics units is enabling sophisticated safety systems and real-time advanced analytics such as driver safety and better fleet insights, which are required to control fleet efficiency, cost and customer service.

So, what are the additional growth drivers in transportation mobility?

  1. The rise of safety operations as a tier 1 functionThe pandemic has caused a shift and elevation in the way that safety programs are administered, tracked, and budgeted. Safety operations and compliance leaders are no longer in a silo; it’s a piece of the fleet management workflow and it must be connected. Leaders need better access to real time information, more transparency into the data before and after accidents, and better methods of training drivers proactively. Leading platforms are now solving even more pressing challenges with the integration of safety solutions with telematics.
  2. Optimizing outcomes using data and analytics has gone mainstream: The 2021 Gartner Market Guide underscores what we’ve been seeing at IntelliShift for a number of years. Operations leaders want full transparency into core business processes and the ability to configure them from those that know the business process best on the front lines. This increases the likelihood of optimal business outcomes like reduced accidents, greater asset efficiencies, higher utilization rates, and even stronger revenue.

Transportation Mobility Technologies: Beyond Traditional Telematics

According to Gartner, one segment of transportation mobility vendors “focuses mainly on the insights received from the data and how these can be translated into decisions and optimize a workflow. These vendors use a large ecosystem of partners to collect data with a lot of focus around advanced analytics.”

So how is the transportation mobility market defined?

Gartner describes the market as follows: “Transportation mobility technology enables fleet operators in the supply chain to locate and track the movements, as well as monitor conditions, of mobile over-the-road transportation assets in real time, using cellular or, in specific cases, satellite links. It allows these operators to track drivers to ensure driver safety and performance.”

Many traditional pure plays in the telematics space offer the ability to monitor assets and vehicles, but often stop short of a true integrated solution for tracking engine performance, fuel usage, hours of operation, driver performance, maintenance problems, inspection processes and more.

Gartner also highlights the importance that OEM manufacturers are playing in the market going forward. We are aligned in this development as well, with our growing set of ecosystem partners and collaborators including, most recently, Ford Commercial Solutions.

Fleet and field operations folks are now more than ever looking to grow their companies and their careers by improving customer journeys using digital tools. IntelliShift helps these operators become digital consultants inside their own organizations and take Operations Intelligence initiatives to the next level. The IntelliShift platform is grounded in powerful analytics and data visualization tools to offer a complete picture of your operations including telematics, fuel, safety, vehicle service, inspections, hours of service, video telematics, assets and more.

Managing Operations with Optimal Outcomes and KPI Transparency

Later in the guide, Gartner describes a few core areas where these platforms excel in providing benefits with general metrics they have seen in the market. Without disclosing all the details, we believe the report is on point and we are excited to share some of our own research and metrics later this month with our inaugural 2021 State of Connected Operations Report, where we highlight how our customers solve similar challenges and achieve critical KPIs.

Some of Gartner’s core recommendations are that evaluators of these technologies should focus on adhering to ELD mandates, enhancing driver safety, driving real time visibility, and improving vehicle performance with real time monitoring. Setting KPIs and measuring weekly and monthly metrics is one of the core benefits of the IntelliShift platform. It is impossible to manage what you are not measuring, so taking the first step to recording and maintaining these KPIs will help instantly understand the opportunities and challenges at a deeper level (and also how they are dependent on one another!).

In particular, we’ve helped leaders in safety, field operations, fleet operations and compliance look beyond dots on a map and mundane repetitive daily manual activities, to become growth and business process consultants within their own organizations to positively impact real business outcomes and ROI, delight customers, and drive employee productivity.

One recent example is a leading construction company called Stavola construction, which has leveraged IntelliShift’s Connected Operations platform to gain better visibility for across the supply chain. Learn how Stavola improved job site efficiency – saving hundreds of supervisor hours per year using IntelliShift.

And see how IntelliShift helped a large utilities provider gain end-to-end visibility on its vehicles and assets and take its safety program to the next level – reducing accidents by 33% and speeding violations by 23%.
