How a fifth-generation ready mix producer moved from human-review video telematics to AI Dash Cams that recognize good driving in real time.

Geiger Ready-Mix has been in the building materials business for more than 130 years, and in the ready-mix business since 1949. Today, the fifth-generation, family-owned company delivers concrete across the Kansas City metro with 130 of its own mixers and roughly 30 hired trucks.

Safety Director Bob Wilhelmi knows the fleet from the driver’s seat. He spent 15 years behind the wheel at Geiger, where he became the company’s loudest advocate for cameras. In 2019, leadership created the safety director role and handed him the keys.

The Challenge: A System That Relied on Human Review

Geiger adopted video telematics early and saw real value from coaching. But their system relied on human review of flagged clips, and over six years, the cracks widened:

  • Support tickets took days. "Usually, I had my problem fixed by the time they responded," Bob says.
  • No red light detection. Their provider said it could not reliably recognize red lights, a critical risk for mixers running urban routes.
  • Aging, failing hardware, and side cameras Bob describes as big, bulky, and funky.
  • Scoring that only punished. Coaching only happened when a clip got flagged, so drivers got dinged for events with no credit for the thousands of things they did right.

When it came time to re-invest, Geiger researched the market, shortlisted five providers, and interviewed each one. Then Bob ran a head-to-head trial: IntelliShift against the incumbent.

Why IntelliShift: Recognition Changes the Narrative

Sticking with the incumbent would have been the easy button. The trucks were already wired, and everyone knew the system. What changed Bob’s mind was how IntelliShift’s AI analyzes 100% of drivetime instead of waiting on human review, so GreenZone scoring and Driver Stars put driver behavior in full context, providing the full context of driving operations vs. just the things that were not going right.

While the GreenZone score grades the whole fleet on every mile driven, Driver Stars recognize individual moments of good judgment, like braking hard to avoid a collision. Together, they mean drivers earn credit for doing the right thing instead of just demerits for mistakes.

"IntelliShift recognizes good behavior instead of just slapping everybody's hand for bad behavior. If I told you we ran 253 stoplights in June, that would be concerning. But the fact that we encountered more than 200,000 stoplights that month changes the whole narrative. That's what I needed: apples to apples."

Ready mix is a tough environment for any camera system. Trucks work off-road, job sites start in the dark, and every truck runs five camera views. IntelliShift’s HD video, night vision, side cameras, and 9-inch in-cab monitors gave Geiger coverage the previous system never had. Additionally, the dash cams instilled trust and confidence amongst drivers who view the cameras as a source of protection, not a watchdog.

900+ Consistent fleet GreenZone safety score
99% Stoplight compliance across 200,000+ monthly encounters
The GreenZone score is how IntelliShift AI Dash Cams grade a fleet’s driving across every mile: safe habits earn points, risky events cost them, and the score climbs as driving improves.
  • A fleet-wide GreenZone score consistently above 900, sitting at 919 this month.
  • Real-time collision alerts that make the safety team first to know. When a driver lost control on a rural road with no one around to call for help, IntelliShift's alert reached Bob immediately, and Geiger got responders to the scene right away.
  • Side cameras that protect drivers, too. When a driver twisted and fell walking back to his truck on a dark job site at 4 a.m., night vision footage confirmed his injury claim and cleared any doubt.
  • Self-service tools. Bob builds his own geofences to filter out unavoidable events, no support ticket or month-long committee required.

The data now drives a weekly coaching rhythm. Bob reviews the highest and lowest performers and meets with Plant Managers, who get with the drivers for further coaching. He also converts justified hard-braking events into Driver Stars. One driver with repeated distracted driving alerts turned her score around completely after coaching.

Bob's Advice for Fleets

"IntelliShift has the ability to expand, they're always trying new things, and they'll listen to you. Having experience with multiple companies makes me a more knowledgeable person, and I can say I would definitely give IntelliShift a shot."
