Executive Order 13834: Efficient Federal Operations

On May 17, 2018, the president released Executive Order 13834.

The purpose of Executive Order 13834 is to enact statutory requirements related to “energy and environmental performance of executive departments and agencies”. This order “increases efficiency, optimizes performance, eliminates unnecessary use of resources, and protects the environment”.

To stay compliant with the executive order, agencies and organizations must work to right-size their fleets. This involves assessing the efficiency and utilization of all assets and vehicles across the fleet. Then, determine which assets and vehicles are unnecessary to cut back on fleet size. Right-sizing the fleet is not about getting rid of fleet vehicles in a way that inhibits performance, but instead, it saves money, increases efficiency, and protects the environment.

The best way to right-size a fleet is to increase the visibility of the fleet and its performance, measure productivity using information collected by telematics, and make data-driven business decisions to create a green fleet.
